Well Mark O'Brien is the Mad Fisherman Contest Winner for June. Two months in a row for Mark who weighed in a 38.4 pound striper caught from a boat off of Block on eels. Congrats to Mark who will receive a $25 gift certificate to the shop.
For the month of July, The Mad Fisherman's Contest will open to surf only. (Sorry Mark). So far we have a 26.96 weighed in from Josh Richardson. HE was also using eels, and yes it is a surf hog.
As for a fishing report....slow from shore unless you are fishing eels or bunker at dusk into the night. From shore there is a lot of scup being caught and a trigger fish here and there. Boat guys are doing very good on fluke, seabass, and striper. Big blues are also in the mix. The warmer waters are hurting the surf and fly guys right now.
That's all for now,
Robin and Jeff
FISHING REPORT
June 11, 201)
The dirty water has slowed down the fishing a bit this week. Staying inside Quonny and Charlestown breach way is the better choice. The reefs off Misquamicut are srill hot. Tons of stripers are breaking on top in the salt ponds with the worm hatch still in action. Swimming Eels and chunking fresh bunker at night are bringing in legal stripers. Richard from Westerly did great fluking off of Atlantic Beach. He had 5 keepers, and twelve shorts, with the largest weighing 8.5 pounds and 28". Wade was in his kayak in PT Judith Pond and landed a 6.5 28 inch fluke on local squid. He also had three nice keeper bass tube and worming. He was fishing at about 36' of water using Peruvian Smelt. Scup is showing up along the jetties, and is being taken on sandworms.
What a spring this has been here in Southern Rhode Island!!! From the shores of East Beach to the tip of Napatree Point stripers with substance are being caught. Fly fisherman are enjoying Quonny and Ninigret Pond, surf casters have been taking in the stripers in Weekapaug and Quonny Breach Ways. John H had a 15.8 out at Napatree point on fresh bunker. Anglers have been using many different approaches to pull fish. Cocahoes, storms, bucktail jigs with rinds, swimmers, deceivers, clousers, and Pt. Jude's sandeel and butter fish metals are what's working. Ty and his brother Matt did well with cocahoes and Ty's own private stock of flies especially his own tied black and purple clouser. We now carry a bunch of Ty's flies here at Quonny B & T.
Fluke has started to heat up. Capt. Thom from ThomCat Charters says they are doing great from Point Judith all all down the coast.Green Hill and all the regular spots off Misquamicut have brought in some nice keepers, With the regulation size back down to 19.5 less throw backs are taking place. Ted and Lisa from Enfield CT had 6 keepers and only 3 under limit this past week, jigging with Spros and smelt. For fluke, the go to lure is Thom Cats Fluke Rigs, they get the job done!!! A little strip of Fishbone Bait's local squid and a big fat mummie has brought in keepers as well.
For bait fishing eels are the trick at night. Chunking bunker, preferrably fresh, is a good choice right now. Mack and herring has produced as well as Local Spearing and mummie sandwich.
This month's Mad Fisherman Contest winner is Mark O'Brien, a local guy from Charlestown. Mark edged out John Hanecak's 15.8 with a nice 18.35 pounder with only a few hours left to the contest. (Sorry John) Congrats Mark. Stop in and pick up your $25 gift certificate to the shop.
That's all for now. Stop in and say hello.
Keep the knees a knockin "FISH ON"
